The usual timing
- Early morning, before buses leave. The most common time. Staff check the roads and the latest forecast in the small hours, the superintendent decides, and the message goes out so families know before the first buses.
- The evening before. When a big storm is certain, many districts decide the night before so families can plan childcare.
- A delay first, then a closure. Some districts announce a delay early and upgrade it to a closure once crews see the roads.
- Midday early dismissal. When a storm arrives during the school day.
Each district sets its own practice, so check how yours usually does it.
How districts tell families
- Text, phone and email alerts (make sure your contact details are current in the district's system).
- The district website and social media accounts.
- Local TV and radio closing lists.
The district's own channels are the official source. The calculator never reports official closings.
When to check the calculator
| Time (local) | What you see |
|---|---|
| Afternoon and evening | Tomorrow's chance, updated every hour as new forecasts arrive. |
| Late evening | The forecast most families plan around. A good time to check before bed. |
| Before 9 AM | The calculator switches to today and keeps updating until morning. |
From mid-October to mid-April the forecast refreshes hourly from 2 PM to 9 AM Eastern, and every three hours otherwise.

Why decisions come so early
Buses leave early, and a decision has to reach families before then. Waiting longer means better information about the roads, but less notice for parents. That is the trade-off every district makes, and why the forecast at bus time matters so much to the decision.
